Looking For Higher Pay? Here’s Where To Find It

The newly released list of the highest-paying jobs in the U.S. for 2019 shows that if you are looking for the highest paying jobs in the United States, California may be your best shot. Nine of the 10 companies that have the highest median salary for employees are located in the Golden State. Career site Glassdoor, which puts out the list each year, compiled the rankings based on salary reviews left between July 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019.

Glassdoor’s data shows that Palo Alto Networks, a 14 year-old multinational cybersecurity company based in Santa Clara, California, heads the list of the highest paying companies in America with a median salary of $170,929. That puts it ahead of Nvidia, where the average employee takes home $170,068 per year, and Twitter, which has a median salary of $162,852.

The other seven in the top 10 are Gilead Sciences ($162,210); Google ($161,254); VMware ($158,063); LinkedIn ($157,402); Facebook ($152,962); Salesforce ($150,379); and Microsoft ($148,068). Nine of the ten on the list are based in California. The only outlier is Microsoft, which is still on the West Coast in nearby Washington State. Real estate prices in the region are sky high and competition for qualified workers is intense, which could be part of the reason salaries in the region are as high as they are.

While tech companies have the highest median pay, the highest paying job in America isn’t in the tech field. Health care roles take the top four spots overall and comprise half of the top 10. The highest-paid workers in the country are physicians, with a median base salary of $193,415. That is more than three-and-a-half times the national median pay of $52,950.

Pharmacy managers come in second, earning $144,768 per year, followed by dentists ($142,478) and pharmacists ($126,438). The rest of the top 10 are Enterprise Architect ($122,585); Corporate Counsel ($117,588); Software Engineering Manager ($114,163); Physician Assistant ($113,855); Corporate Controller ($113,368); and Software Development Manager ($109,809). All of the top 10 highest-paying jobs pay over $100,000.
