Third Tesla Model S Catches Fire – More Bad PR for California EV Maker?Yet another Tesla Model S has been caught on video catching fire following a crash, making this the third time in two months the premium, yet popular electric luxury car has been reported to have caught on fire following an accident.

This recent Model S fire took place in Tennessee, and came a month after separate Model S units caught fire in Washington state and Mexico.  According to Tesla, none of the fires had taken place in undamaged units.  The company added that out of around 19,000 Model S cars that are presently in use, it is not aware of any other related incidents.

“We have been in contact with the driver, who was not injured and believes the car saved his life,” read a Tesla Motors statement. “Our team is on its way to Tennessee to learn more about what happened in the accident. We will provide more information when we’re able to do so.”  The name of the driver has not yet been made public, nor have the particulars of the crash.

The Washington Model S fire from last month had happened due to a piece of metal puncturing the car’s battery, as it is located in the floor, rather than under the hood.  This resulted in the front portion of the Model S getting engulfed by flames, though internal firewalls had prevented the fire from reaching the passenger compartment.

Following the news of the new Model S fire, Tesla stock prices dropped 7 percent, though the company’s stock is now firming a bit, at $139.80 per share, or 0.02 percent up from yesterday.
